Biography

I am an Associate Professor of Criminal Law and Criminology at Universitat Jaume I and Jean Monnet Chair holder in EU Blue Criminology and Ocean Governance (BLUECRIME-GOV). I teach and conduct research in criminology, criminal law, and criminal policy. My academic work focuses on green criminology, environmental criminal law, and ecological governance, with particular attention to marine environmental crime, ecological justice, and ocean protection.

My academic background combines legal and criminological training, including a PhD in Law, a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice, and a degree in Criminology. My interdisciplinary approach is further developed through doctoral training in Marine Ecology. This combination has allowed me to develop a research line at the intersection of criminal-law analysis, critical criminology, and socio-environmental studies.

My research addresses ecocide, marine pollution, underwater noise, climate change, ocean governance, and criminal-law responses to ecological harm. I work through interdisciplinary and comparative approaches that connect legal analysis, criminology, ecology, and environmental evidence. My academic activity also includes teaching, supervision, knowledge transfer, public engagement, and collaboration with research networks and institutions working on environmental harm and marine sustainability.

My work in public engagement, media collaboration, and knowledge transfer is also presented in the Media and Outreach sections.

Jean Monnet Chair

Since 1 October 2026, I have held the Jean Monnet Chair in EU Blue Criminology and Ocean Governance (BLUECRIME-GOV) at Universitat Jaume I.

The Chair connects teaching, research, and public engagement on the European Union’s response to crime and environmental harm in the marine environment. It brings together criminology, European Union law, and the humanities through an Earth system perspective, with particular attention to marine protection, ecological harm, and ocean governance.

The project runs from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2029 under Grant Agreement No. 101319975.

BLUECRIME-GOV now has a dedicated website at Universitat Jaume I. Information on teaching activities, events, research outputs, and resources is available on the BLUECRIME-GOV website .

Research interests

Green and blue criminology

I study environmental crime and harm on land and at sea, including marine pollution, biodiversity loss, illegal fishing, and broader forms of ecological damage affecting coastal and ocean ecosystems.

Environmental criminal law and ecocide

My work examines how criminal law conceptualises ecological harm and how legal systems protect ecosystems. This includes environmental offences, ecocentric understandings of legal interests, and debates on ecocide in domestic and international law.

Marine ecosystems and environmental evidence

I am interested in underwater noise, desalination brine, impacts on Posidonia oceanica, and interdisciplinary methods for identifying and evidencing ecological damage.

Climate change and planetary boundaries

I explore how climate change, planetary boundaries, and ecological crisis challenge conventional approaches to criminal policy, environmental protection, security, and socioecological responsibility.

Teaching

My teaching covers criminal law, criminology, criminal justice, environmental harm, and interdisciplinary approaches to ecological accountability and restoration. I teach across undergraduate, double-degree, and master’s programmes.

At Universitat Jaume I, my teaching has included Criminal Law I, Criminal Law II, Theory and Enforcement of Punishment, Specific Forms of Crime, research projects, external placements, bachelor’s dissertations, and master’s dissertations. I have also taught at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya and the Universitat de les Illes Balears.

I combine seminar-based, case-based, and practice-oriented teaching approaches and participate in educational innovation initiatives related to criminality, ecological harm, and applied learning.
